Preamble

Profiting from the meeting held in Andalusia by experts and professionals in the field coming from all over the world, and coinciding with the European Year of People with Disabilities, the International Conference on Adapted Sport proposes the whole society the following Decalogue of Adapted Sport:

  1. Adapted Sport has no need of further adjectives: it is sport. The paralympic athlete is entitled to an equal treatment at sporting, institutional and social level.

  2. Adapted Physical Activity and Sport are essential to achieve integration and respect for diversity.

  3. The International Paralympic Movement should work in constant collaboration with the International Olympic Committee.

  4. Public and private bodies have a duty to support sport, regardless of differences and adjectives.

  5. The Media have to assume a leading role to spread the human and sporting values represented by Adapted Sport.

  6. Adapted Physical Activity should be included in the functional reintegration programs for all disabled people, whatever their age.

  7. The experience of the disability will provide an essential element for the training of Adapted Physical Activity and SportÂ’s professionals.

  8. Research and new technologies should favor the improvement of sport results and enhance the daily life of disabled people.

  9. Through Adapted Physical Activity and Sport, disabled women set an example of gender equality and respect for diversity.

  10. CIDA 2003 has sowed in Malaga the seeds for the future of Adapted Sport in the 21st century, thus becoming the finishing touch of the European Year of People with Disabilities.
